Important aspects of a logo design project

Logo DesignA logo speaks volumes about a company and its products. It acts like a trademark and should immediately trigger a reaction from the viewer. This is laid out in the AIDA principle:

A = Attention

I = Interest

D = Desire

A = Action

The logo must catch the attention of the viewer and create a feeling of longing for the company’s product. The aspect of building trust is also important. A trademark that has never failed to satisfy will be recommended to friends and will be preferred over others. But what do you do if you don’t have a proper logo designer at your disposal?

A good option here is outsourcing on platforms like twago. Here, you describe your project and post it for freelancers or agencies to complete. It’s also important to add a company profile, company size, and your target audience. In the end, it is crucial for the designer to know what kind of company the logo is being made for. The designer must acquire an accurate impression of the company and communicate with them to clarify any problems that may occur. This way a professional logo can be created that is true to the company’s image.

What makes a logo good?

There are certain criteria that the designer and the employer must consider.

Comprehensibility

The logo must be understood immediately, even by a child. It is often beneficial to combine a word and design in the logo. The company’s name is then linked with the logo and makes the viewer instantly draw the connection to the represented company.

Memorability

The logo should be memorable and associated with the company. While shaping the design of the logo, it is important to remember that the logo must look good everywhere and at any time—be it on a product, letterhead or  merchandise, such as T-shirts and pens.

Target Audience

A logo must cater to the company’s target audience. The logo should evoke the type of company or the type of business. A producer of toys, for example, will want a more playful logo than that of a doctor, who would want a more trustworthy, sophisticated one.

Neutral to time

A logo must be designed to fit the style of the current time period. It should only be changed – if necessary – in wide intervals. If changed, it should never be altered too immensely, since a too radical change might confuse former customers who could stop buying from the company. In order to prevent this from occurring, one should plan such changes carefully and never forget the target audience, who must like the new logo. A celebrity example of such a logo change would be Microsoft. In 2012, the software giant changed its logo for the first time in 25 years. Added to the usual lettering were four tiles in different colors, symbolizing four different screens: TV, PC, tablet, and smartphone.

Secure the logo design

A logo is supposed to become a trademark. This is why it is essential to check, before creating the logo, if another company is using a similar logo which could confuse customers. If the logo does not exist, it is often a good idea to apply for a national or international patent or trademark protection for the logo in order to protect it. This protection of your logo requires money and, in Germany, is limited to a certain amount of time.

Procedure of a logo design project

First, one must consider exactly what the logo should say. What will it persuade potential customers to do? What kind of reaction will it evoke? What does your company, your business, stand for and what is your logo consequently going to display? Make a basic sketch and collect ideas. A detailed project description will help the logo designer make the ideal logo for you and your company. Here is an example of a well-written description:

“For our online shop we need a logo design that can be used for the shop itself (sales platform for all products) as well as for the brand name. Bags, backpacks, as well as covers for electronic products will be sold in a unique and colorful design. The logo also should be unique and memorable at the same time. A corresponding slogan would be wanted as well. The design must also be usable on social platforms.”

Consequently, there are four different steps that lead up to the completion of the logo design:

1. Describing the project

2. Recieving offers

3. Choosing the best freelancer/agency

4. Complete project
