Freelancer Sebastian Schalipp from Munich, Germany and his son

Many people make use of new possibilities to establish an independent and flexible career. More and more people make use of the advantages of online intermediation platforms and become self-employed. Munich (Germany) based service provider Sebastian Schalipp has chosen family life by working from home and he is one of the top service providers on twago.

Sebastian Schalipp from Munich, Germany uses this independence to work from home as a web designer, creating web pages and logos. Schalipp finds his customers and projects almost exclusively through twago. He is now working with customers from all over Europe. Before twago he only could concentrate on partners from the area around Munich, Germany. After 20 years of work experience as a trained graphic designer and web developer and the establishment of two successful businesses, he deliberately took a hiatus to take care of his son while his wife opened a practice in Munich. After that, he chose to work from home as a freelancer. “Having been the boss of a company for so many years it would be difficult to go back into employment,” he explains. “The path to gaining independence always excited me”, he explains. According to Schalipp, choosing your own projects and deciding how you work offers unbelievable advantages, not to mention more enjoyment and effectiveness at work. So far Schalipp has completed 15 projects on twago and his clients have consistently been very happy with his work, giving him an excellent rating of 5 stars out of 5. By now, he is quite busy thanks to twago and has already turned a profit of several thousand Euros. His home is his office. He has a study with three computers and a view of the courtyard. “With twago I can decide how often and how much I want to work,” says Schalipp.  His individually scheduled free time allows for spontaneous trips to the playground with his son. “I can easily combine private- and work life, which has improved my work-life-balance immensely,” Schalipp says. Nonetheless, independence by no means brings infinite free time. “On the contrary, sometimes I work more than 14 hours a day. However, I choose my own work and I do not consider it to be a hinderance”, says Schalipp.

As a freelancer Schalipp makes full use of the advantages of the new media: the Internet allows him to stay in contact with his customers easily and fixed business hours or a permanent office outside of his home are a thing of the past. Of course, it is important that orders are completed according to schedule. “Where and when I work is up to me. And why shouldn’t I take advantage of the nice weather and work from a café? Or I simply take a time-out to go and see a movie with my son,” he says, grinning.

Of course, even the best job can become stressful at times. “At the moment I have so many orders and requests that I unfortunately can’t process and accept all of them,” Schalipp says. Even as freelancer you have to adhere to deadlines. Quality is even more important than it is for employees because it serves as a reference for future customers. Even so, he would not change anything. Schalipp: “The advantages outweigh the disadvantages by far.”

Schalipp came across twago when he was searching for suitable platforms to acquire new customers. “I particularly like that it is user-friendly. Other Internet portals provide very little possibility for exchange before submitting an offer,” Schalipp explains. “twago’s comment function, on the other hand makes it possible to enquire further about a project and get a feeling for it.”
