Description

Freelance IT Support ($200 per day)

Growing internet company seeks freelance IT support for recurring but occasional training and installation work.  The position is ideal for self employed web developers or small business IT support professionals, looking to supplement their income at a fixed rate.  It would also suit students or part time workers, who have an interest in computer hardware and software.  All work will be Monday-Friday 9am-7pm, so this position is not compatible with full time employment with a third party.

Please note that this is not a full time nor a part time position.  The company will notify the freelancer of upcoming work, which they are free to accept or decline.

If accepted, the work will be at these pre arranged rate:

Installation and training:            Full day 9am-7pm                     $200

Two hour client training             2 hours with client                     $80

One hour client meeting            1 hour with client                       $50

The required training will be paid for.  The freelancer will invoice the company for work completed.

The Company

The firm is an internet software company and a leading service provider in a specialised niche sector.  Launched in 2007, the firm has grown steadily and is amongst the four main suppliers in its field.  The company is relatively small, with just 19 employees, but those staff are highly dispersed in five countries around the world.

The company has had a presence in Houston/Minneapolis for two and a half years, but as a consequence of increased sales activity, it now requires need a greater local technical and support presence locally.

The Position

The role will primarily comprise of installing and implementing our technology onsite at client locations.  This will require an affinity with computer hardware, some navigation of networks, and software competence.

The primary role is the initial install and training, which lasts a full day, starting at 9am sharp and ending at 7pm, with an hour for lunch and breaks.

On the day of installation, extensive training will be required.  However, secondary training sessions are often required, which will be just two hours.  Finally, the freelancer may visit existing clients for follow up or general meetings.

Our business is highly cyclical on a weekly basis.  Mondays are our busiest days, and are usually the date most sought for by clients.  This will nearly always be the first day requested by us in a given week.  If not, then Tuesday, then Wednesday.  It is unlikely we will need freelance work on Fridays.

The Candidate

Articulate and numerate freelancer required.  A degree level education is an advantage, but not necessary.  The discipline of degree is not important, but we are looking for a well educated person.  Interests in current affairs, information technology and a broad general knowledge are advantageous.

What is critical is that the contractor shows initiative, is pro-active and has entrepreneurial flair.  This is not a trite human resources cliché, this is crucial to how the company operates.  We need people who can be given a novel task and then left to get on with it using their own initiate: fire and forget if you will.  Our product is not highly technical, but problems arise.  Perhaps the internet is not working, a firewall is causing problems, the client’s staff do not care etc.  There will be problems—after all, if it was straightforward, we would have the clients download the software themselves.  Some people thrive in this environment, and if so, this is a position is for you.

An important element of the position is to build a close rapport with our clients, and to help them through the transition period.  Technical proficiency must be tempered with patience, empathy and an instinct for teaching.  Our client’s employees are hard working and sociable, but are rarely computer software graduates.  The contractor must be patient and assume that the user will not pick things up as quickly as the teacher might.  It is also important to give the staff ownership of the product and the decision to choose our company and its benefits.  The support contractor must balance a sounding board for future development requests with the reality of what is practical given the client’s expenditure.

The applicant must be based in the Houston/Minneapolis area and have reliable private transport.  The candidate must have a full clean driving licence and be a US citizen.

The following technical skills and attributes are sought after:

A computer enthusiast, with natural curiosity about the technical workings of PCs, tablets etc.

Time keeping.  We will not tolerate poor time keeping.

Excellent knowledge of networking, particularly diagnosing connectivity problems required

Knowledge of HTML, JavaScript a distinct advantage

Good knowledge of DNS, domains and IP required

Experience of working with servers via remote access an advantage

Experience of technical support of non-technical users an advantage

Excellent, in-depth knowledge of Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7) at a technical level required

Knowledge of Linux and/or Android would be an advantage

Ability to use programming languages such as Java, VB, PERL, REXX etc. an advantage

Must be articulate and able to communicate clearly

While this is a freelance position, there are installs in the coming weeks.  Therefore if you do not have any free Mondays in the next four weeks, please do not apply.

Finally, though a freelancer, the candidate should present themselves in a manner consistent with our company staff.  For men, a shirt and tie and dress trousers are required when representing the company.  For ladies, a smart top or blouse, with skirt or dress trousers is the dress code.

How to Apply

If you think you are the right candidate for this opportunity, please send a CV (resume) together with a covering letter.  Specifically, in the cover letter, please detail why a freelance position like this appeals to you.
