The firm is an internet software company and a leading service provider in a specialised niche sector. Launched in 2007, the firm has grown steadily and is amongst the four main suppliers in its field. The company is relatively small, with just 19 employees, but those staff are highly dispersed in five countries around the world.
The company has had a presence in Houston/Minneapolis for two and a half years, but as a consequence of increased sales activity, it now requires need a greater local technical and support presence locally.
The role will primarily comprise of installing and implementing our technology onsite at client locations. This will require an affinity with computer hardware, some navigation of networks, and software competence.
The primary role is the initial install and training, which lasts a full day, starting at 9am sharp and ending at 7pm, with an hour for lunch and breaks.
On the day of installation, extensive training will be required. However, secondary training sessions are often required, which will be just two hours. Finally, the freelancer may visit existing clients for follow up or general meetings.
Our business is highly cyclical on a weekly basis. Mondays are our busiest days, and are usually the date most sought for by clients. Perhaps the internet is not working, a firewall is causing problems, the client’s staff do not care etc. There will be problems—after all, if it was straightforward, we would have the clients download the software themselves. Some people thrive in this environment, and if so, this is a position is for you.
An important element of the position is to build a close rapport with our clients, and to help them through the transition period. Technical proficiency must be tempered with patience, empathy and an instinct for teaching. Our client’s employees are hard working and sociable, but are rarely computer software graduates. The contractor must be patient and assume that the user will not pick things up as quickly as the teacher might. It is also important to give the staff ownership of the product and the decision to choose our company and its benefits. The support contractor must balance a sounding board for future development requests with the reality of what is practical given the client’s expenditure.
